Sanitree is a student-led social enterprise based in Edinburgh, Scotland and Jaipur, India. Their aim is to tackle period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation in a sustainable, collaborative, and ethical way.

Their reusable and biodegradable pads are handmade by women in Jaipur using economically and environmentally sustainable fabric which is locally sourced from suppliers who share our ethos.

The Her Shakti Centre in Jaipur is a workspace and community centre where they currently employ 7 beneficiaries from marginalised communities, in flexible and part-time work. Over five years, Sanitree have supported 34 women through a secure income and flexible working hours.

The women who Sanitree employ come from various disadvantaged backgrounds, many are widows and single mothers trying to support their families, and some, victims of domestic abuse and violence. For many, they dropped out of school at a young age and working at the Her Shakti Centre is often their first experience of employment. By employing them Sanitree wish to give them both a source of income, as well as help them learn new skills.

All profits from sales of their pads are reinvested into their social impact work, as well as their cross-subsidisation model to make their pads as affordable as possible. Buying a Sanitree pad directly aids the distribution of pads to those who need it most.
