Eight Week Course in Ceramics

£360.00

Edinburgh & the Lothians

Description

Suitable for beginners and intermediate level students, the course will include different approaches to hand building, wheel throwing and surface decoration.

Held on Tuesday evenings, each weekly class will be from 6 - 8.30pm. This course is suitable for complete beginners and those with prior experience who want to build on their skills. As its longer than some of our other courses, its ideal for those who want to explore a range of techniques, perhaps spend longer on each piece, or want to develop on what they've learned previously. If you've been on a course before you may wish to focus on particular individual projects. Run by both of us (Fiona and Chris), you will be able to benefit from our varied approaches and expertise. A couple of different stoneware clays are used at the studio, with different textures and colour responses and suited to different methods of making.

It will include different kinds of hand building. Firstly, the traditional method of coil building which is ideal for making unique vessels or sculptures. Fiona, who mainly specialises in coil building, will take you through the different stages of making and refining your individual pieces over a few weeks. We will also be covering slab-building, another popular technique where you create pieces out of sheets of clay (these will be prepared for you in advance so are at the right consistency). We have a selection of press moulds for you to use for dishes and plates as well. Other hand building techniques will be included as appropriate, such as carving or pinching forms, or combinations of a couple of techniques.

Cyan Clayworks is a Community Interest Company and a working ceramics studio set up in 2012. Originally at Beaverhall Studios, they relocated in 2023 and are now based on Commercial Street in Edinburgh in a self-contained ground floor space. They offer individual tuition, one off workshops and longer weekly courses for adults. The studio is run by experienced and enthusiastic ceramic artists who make tableware (Chris Donnelly) and sculptural hand built vessels (Fiona Thompson).

As well as regular courses for adults, individual tuition, and student/professional artist project support, there is a membership for keen amateur makers to use the workspace. As a social enterprise, their focus is on encouraging and enabling creative learning for adults in a friendly supportive environment and providing access to specialist facilities. Open studio events and special exhibitions are held at intervals. Fiona and Chris’s own artwork can be purchased through the studio shop – please check the website for up-to-date opening days/times.

The studio can accommodate different ability levels, from complete adult beginners to experienced artists and designers who want to develop their knowledge. Group sizes are kept small and all materials, tools and firings, are provided on site. Enquiries for tuition can be made via email.
